In cases of congestive heart failure, the heart is not able to provide oxygen-rich blood to the body. Congestive heart failure can be caused by:
- diseases that weaken the heart muscle
- diseases that cause stiffening of the heart muscles
- diseases that increase the demand for oxygen by the body tissue beyond the ability of the heart to supply oxygen-rich blood
congestive heart failure can affect many organs of the body, such as:
- kidneys: the weakened heart muscle may not be able to provide enough blood to the kidneys, which then begin to lose their normal ability to excrete salt (sodium) and water
- the lungs (pulmonary edema)
- Liver: compromising its ability to rid the body of toxins
- intestines, can become less efficient at absorbing nutrients and drugs
